Ofqual has confirmed that the first National Reference Test, which will be used to help inform the awarding of GCSEs, will be held in the Spring term.
A sample of around 18,000 students in 300 schools will take the tests in English and maths during February and March 2017 and the results will be used to assess the level of performance of pupils in each cohort and how this changes from year to year. This information will help to inform the grading of GCSEs.
The results for individual pupils and schools will not be published.
While the test could have potential benefits for the exam system, it will not become apparent for a few years whether the test is producing valid and reliable data which will help to ensure that GCSEs are being graded and awarded fairly.
