A Bill which will unfairly limit severance payments to teachers and other public sector workers is currently being considered by the House of Lords.
The Enterprise Bill contains provisions which will mean that teachers on moderate salaries who have been made redundant will be forced to bear the brunt of unfair proposals to limit severance payments.
Despite Government claims that the cap on exit payments will rein in ‘huge taxpayer funded payouts’, the reality is that the limit will take into account not just lump sum payments, but also early access to pensions, and other entitlements such as holiday pay. This could mean that many teachers on moderate incomes could be affected.
The NASUWT believes redundancy payments should continue to be a matter of agreement between unions and employers.
The Union has been working with MPs and Lords to seek to amend the provisions of the Bill.
