End grace-and-favour access to CPD

Teachers at the Annual Conference of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, have today called for the introduction of a contractual entitlement for all teachers to high-quality continuing professional development (CPD) throughout their careers.

The Conference, which is being held in Cardiff, has heard that too many employers are denying teachers the opportunity to engage in appropriate training and professional development to support high-quality classroom practice.

93% of teachers who responded to the NASUWT’s Big Question survey believe that all teachers should have a contractual entitlement to CPD during the working day.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“All professionals need access to high-quality professional development.

“Access should not be on the basis of grace and favour, which is currently the case for teachers.

“The NASUWT’s research has highlighted consistently the variability in teachers’ experiences of and access to CPD.

“Too many teachers report difficulties in obtaining CPD that is relevant and supports them to develop their professional practice and develop their career aspirations.

“The only thing constant about education is change and yet teachers are expected to implement it without a thought being given to the support or training they might need.

“In the run-up to the General Election, politicians are all talking about the importance of CPD. This is meaningless and nothing will change unless they also talk about a contractual entitlement for teachers to access it.”
